Shelter & Rescue Partners

Partnering with shelters and rescues across South Texas to raise live release rates and save more lives.

Partnership Built on Collaboration

GCHS has worked alongside shelters and rescues across Texas and the country for decades. We don't believe in keeping the programs and practices we've built to ourselves because when shelters in our region improve their outcomes, more animals survive across the Coastal Bend.

Here's what working with GCHS can look like.

Opportunities to Work Together

Our partnerships are built on case-by-case coordination and shared life-saving outcomes.

Need Placement for an At-Risk Animal?

Over 60% of our animals come from partner shelters, pulled from euthanasia lists before they run out of time. If you're over capacity or have an animal whose needs exceed your current resources, please reach out.

We prioritize intake from Nueces, San Patricio, Kleberg, Jim Wells, and Aransas counties, but unfortunately we cannot meet the needs of every request.

Want to save animals from South Texas through transport?

We maintain active transport pipelines to partners across the country, primarily in regions where adoptable pet demand is higher than local supply. If your organization is consistently under capacity, we may be able to place animals with you.

All animals we send are vaccinated, treated for injuries or illnesses, spayed or neutered, and health-certified before transport.

Improving Outcomes Together

As the largest no-kill shelter in our region, we are proud to offer support and guidance across the Coastal Bend to help our partner shelters save more lives. If your organization wants to work on improving its live release rate, strengthen its foster program, or work through operational challenges, we're here to help.

This isn't a formal consulting program. It's a professional relationship built on shared goals.

Partnering with GCHS

Here's what prospective partners should know about how we work.

We prioritize South Texas

The Coastal Bend gets first priority, but we'll consider partners elsewhere on a case-by-case basis.

We prioritize urgency

Animals scheduled for euthanasia come first — we work to pull the animals with the least time.

We're transparent about capacity

We won't take more than we can responsibly care for, and we'll always tell you when we're full.

We value peer communication

We operate like a partner, not a vendor. Open, honest, and focused on shared life-saving goals.

Pet Food & Supplies for Qualifying Organizations

When donated food and supplies exceed what our shelter and local pantry can use, we distribute the excess to qualified partner organizations at no cost. This program helps resource-constrained organizations keep their animals fed and healthy.

Who Can Apply

We accept applications from:

  • 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal shelters and rescues without active food partnerships
  • 501(c)(3) Farm animal, small animal, and wildlife organizations
  • Municipal animal shelters within our 5-county service area

We do not approve applications from:

  • Feral cat feeders
  • Pure transport groups
  • General food banks or pantries
  • Breeders

Review Process

In addition to confirming eligibility, we may conduct a phone interview or site visit, speak with your veterinarian, and review your public online presence. GCHS reserves the right to approve or deny any application and conducts periodic reviews to ensure ongoing compliance.
